OU Essay - 1690 Words
IT Department of OU Organizations are composed of people, and the more effective those people, the stronger the organization. As a member of this organization I have learned more about myself, new skills, and how to work in teams. Every organization should consider what approach or metaphor best describe them, what message are they sending to those who want to get involved, and does history matter? This paper will discuss the organization I am currently in, and compare it to the machine metaphor, two reward systems used in this organization, and celebrating accomplishments. My research experience was both positive and negative. Before I began my research, I had done a preliminary search to determine whether there was enough information out there for this organization. Then, I began to organize the information I have collected. I faced two major problems during my research. I was unable to contact any high positioned staffs. Also, the online chart of this organization was showing an error. However, the research was successfully completed. 1. Comparing organization to machine metaphor. People use metaphors to learn words in a different way. Metaphors, similes, and analogies make comparisons in slightly different ways. A metaphor states that something is something else without using the word like or as. According to my research, in my opinion, I seem to find the machine metaphor fits best to this organization. We can design and operate machines to do exactly what we want. Each part has a precise function which it carries out repetitively and without variation resulting in reliable overall performance. According to Millers organizational communication approaches and processes, the machine metaphor looks at despaired objects that organizations are alike. In order the machine to work properly, four aspects are critical; specialization, standardization, replaceability and predictability.
